Of Filipino and Greek heritage, he is married with three daughters: a 12-year-old and 14-year-old from a previous marriage, and a 19-year-old step-daughter. His wife Angie is a survivor of ovarian cancer.
Early career:
Before getting into professional wrestling, Batista worked as a bouncer in various clubs, and was once arrested for brawling with a man even though his actions were taken in self-defense.
Batista's wrestling career began when he met Curt Hennig and Joseph Laurinaitis (Road Warrior Animal) at a bodybuilding meeting. He tried out at the WCW Power Plant but was told he'd never make it in the wrestling business. He then went to the WWF who sent him to work with Afa Anoai. He wrestled in Anoai's WXW promotion under the name Kahn.
He made his TV debut in Ohio Valley Wrestling in 2000, joining forces with Synn. During his tenure in OVW he used the name Leviathan. As a member of the Disciples of Synn stable he won the OVW Heavyweight Championship from 'The Machine' Doug Basham. After losing the belt to The Prototype, Synn felt Batista was getting too independent and "sold" him to Reverend D-Von to begin his WWE career.
World Wrestling Entertainment:
Batista began his WWE career as Deacon Batista a heel enforcer for Reverend D-Von on the SmackDown! brand. After splitting with D-Von, he went to RAW and was rebranded as Dave Batista, or simply Batista. After establishing himself as a monster through a series of squash matches, including one where he maliciously spinebusted Tajiri
twice, then did his dreaded Batista Bomb to him, then viciously choked Tajiri until green goo came from his mouth, sending him to the hospital for a long recovery, he aligned himself with Ric Flair and feuded with Kane. In January 2003 he joined Triple H, Ric Flair, and Randy Orton to become part of Evolution.
Batista has won the World Tag-Team Championship twice with Flair, and even held it during a stretch when all the men's championship belts on RAW - the World Heavyweight Championship, WWE Intercontinental Championship and World Tag Team Championship - were all held by members of Evolution, one belt for each of its four members.
His Royal Rumble victory on January 30, 2005 earned him the right to participate in the main event of WrestleMania 21 against the champion of his choice; on Monday Night Raw, February 22, 2005, Batista turned on Triple H and Ric Flair after overhearing them discuss Triple H's plan to get Batista to leave for SmackDown! – (a plan which included staging WWE Champion John Bradshaw Layfield running him over with his limo). He turned his back on them by signing a new contract with the RAW brand to face World Heavyweight Champion Triple H at WrestleMania 21, officially leaving the Evolution stable.
Batista won his first World Heavyweight Championship on April 3, 2005 after defeating Triple H.
At Backlash, on May 1, 2005, Batista once again faced Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship. Batista retained the title, but continued to feud with Triple H.
On May 23, 2005 Batista also successfully defeated Edge to retain his title. Edge had won the Gold Rush Tournament on Monday Night Raw with help from his heel girlfriend Lita, who turned on her husband Kane. During the match Ric Flair appeared to come out into the ring to help Batista; in actuality it was just a set-up. Ric Flair disabled Batista with a low blow so Triple H could beat him with his trademark sledgehammer. The show closed with Batista a bloody mess after Triple H pedigreed his head onto the World Heavyweight Championship.
On May 30, Batista faced Muhammad Hassan. Angered by his humiliation at the hands of Triple H, Batista took out his frustrations on Hassan and his manager, Daivari. Batista was disqualified for not releasing Hassan from a turnbuckle choke before the count of five, but appeared not to care whether he won or lost. After the match, Batista avoided an attempt at retribution by Hassan, repeatedly driving his head into the concrete before leveling him with a steel chair shot to the head. He then finished off Hassan and Daivari each with a Batista Bomb, sending a message to Triple H. As a result of the beating, Hassan and Daivari threatened to file a lawsuit against RAW, and Eric Bischoff compromised by granting them a shot at the Intercontinental Championship against Shelton Benjamin in a handicap match.
At Vengeance 2005 in Las Vegas on June 26, Batista survived the pedigree and won the Hell in a Cell match following a Batista Bomb.
On June 30, John Bradshaw Layfield was celebrating his victory in a 6 man elimination match to win the new Smackdown World Championship, when SmackDown! manager Theodore Long informed the former WWE Champ that there was no need for the new belt, because Smackdown already had a World Champion, Batista's music hit, and the shocked crowd popped as the World Champion made his way to the ring.
Batista defeated Christian on July 7, 2005 after a fairly long non-title match. Before the match, he interfered in a match between JBL and The Blue Meanie, giving JBL a spinebuster to help seal Meanie's victory. JBL, with Orlando Jordan, tried to get back at Batista by attacking him as soon as the match was over but was unsuccessful and instead saw his Chief of Staff, Orlando Jordan getting Batista Bombed. Giving Batista the last laugh and sending a message to JBL.
Batista and JBL met in a match at The Great American Bash on July 24, 2005 for the World Heavyweight Championship. When the referee was knocked out, Orlando Jordan tried to interfere in the match by hitting Batista with a steel chair shot but Batista ripped the steel chair out of Orlando's hands and smashed JBL and Orlando over the head. Unfortunately, the referee was awake by the time Batista was getting ready to hit them and disqualified Batista after seeing him strike JBL and Orlando Jordan with the steel chair. After Batista heard the bell and realized that he was disqualified, he decided to finish off his rivals each with 11 steel chair shots to the back and head. As he was heading up the ramp with his Heavyweight Championship Title, Batista snapped after hearing the announcement of JBL being the official victor of the match and stormed back into the ring where he hit JBL and Orlando each with a Batista Bomb.
Return from injury (2006)
On January 9, WWE.com announced that Batista tore his right triceps during a match with Mark Henry at a live event on January 6 in Verona, New York. WWE.com announced that, due to his injury, Batista was forced to vacate the World Heavyweight Championship at the SmackDown! tapings in Philadelphia on January 10 (aired on January , two days after surpassing Triple H's previous mark of 280 days for longest reigning champion. Later that night, Kurt Angle won a battle royal to become the new World Heavyweight Champion. In his book, Batista Unleased, Bautista said that he believed that Henry was "careless" during their match as he never gave Bautista any warning that the move (Chocolate Mousse) was coming. Dave went on to have successful surgery on his arm on January 12.
Batista made an appearance at No Way Out and told the crowd that once his arm had healed he would return to regain his World Heavyweight Championship.[60] At WrestleMania 22, he interrupted a Randy Orton interview, putting SmackDown! on notice; the World Heavyweight Championship would return to him by WrestleMania 23.Batista made his official return during the July 7 edition of SmackDown! in Philadelphia immediately calling out and entering into a feud with the man who put him out with the arm injury, Mark Henry. At Saturday Night's Main Event, Batista won his first televised match since his return, a six man tag match with Rey Mysterio and Lashley taking on King Booker, Finlay, and Mark Henry.[63] In a bizarre twist of fate, Mark Henry was legitimately injured and was ruled out of the scheduled match between the two at The Great American Bash, thus further delaying a potential feud between the two after being delayed by Batista's initial injury.
Batista put out an open challenge to replace the injured Henry, which was answered by Mr. Kennedy. Batista lost this match via DQ for failing to stop choking Mr. Kennedy into the turnbuckle with his boot, but continued to attack Kennedy resulting in a laceration on his forehead so severe that it exposed his cranium and required more than 20 stitches to close. Batista lost another match with Kennedy via count out in a rematch on SmackDown! before finally defeating Kennedy by pinfall on the August 4 edition of SmackDown!.
During this time Batista tried to regain a world title, facing both the Big Show for his ECW Championship during an ECW show,[69] and King Booker for his World Heavyweight Championship during SummerSlam and SmackDown!. Batista won the SummerSlam match, but not the title as the contests ended via disqualification meaning Booker retained the title.[70] In the SmackDown! bout a few weeks later, Booker retained with help from his Court.
World Champion again (2006-2007)
Batista remained a top contender to the World Title, competing against King Booker on several occasions while feuding with Finlay, before finally defeating King Booker to regain the World Heavyweight Championship at Survivor Series at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center.Ironically, the win occurred at the same arena where he surrendered the title in January.
At the beginning of the new year, Batista successfully retained the World Heavyweight Championship against Mr. Kennedy at the Royal Rumble. Two months later at WrestleMania 23, Batista lost the championship to the winner of the Royal Rumble match, The Undertaker. They continued to battle over the title to a stalemate in a subsequent Last Man Standing match at Backlash and a Steel Cage Match on the May 11 episode of SmackDown!. Following the latter, Edge took advantage and won the title from the Undertaker by using his Money in the Bank title opportunity. Afterwards, Batista challenged Edge unsuccessfully for the World Heavyweight Championship at Judgment Day, One Night Stand in a Steel Cage Match, and Vengeance. The loss at Vengeance stipulated that Batista could no longer get another chance at the World Heavyweight Championship while Edge remained champion.
Batista accepted an open challenge from The Great Khali for The Great American Bash. Edge relinquished the title due to an injury the week before the PPV, and Khali became the new World Heavyweight Champion, winning a Battle Royal and eliminating Batista. Batista and Kane, Edge's title opponent, faced Khali at The Great American Bash in a triple threat match where Khali retained the title.[81] Batista received a disqualification victory against Khali at Summerslam after Khali used a steel chair, thus retaining the title again.[82] Batista finally claimed his third World Heavyweight Championship after eight consecutive attempts, by defeating Khali in a match that included Rey Mysterio at Unforgiven. His first challenge was from the Great Khali in a Punjabi Prison Match at No Mercy where Batista retained his title despite Khali having the majority of the offense. He won the match by leaping from the inner bamboo structure to the outer one, shortening his escape route and beating Khali to the floor.
After the return of the The Undertaker at Unforgiven, the duo re-ignited their feud at Cyber Sunday where the fans chose Guest Referee Stone Cold Steve Austin. Batista won via two Batista Bombs. The feud continued with a Hell in a Cell match at Survivor Series. During the match, Edge returned and interfered by giving Undertaker a con-chair-to. He then pulled an unconscious Batista on top of Undertaker for the pinfall to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
Unfortunately for Batista, this was a sign of things to come. At Armageddon, Edge would be entered into a Triple Threat Match, alongside The Undertaker, to challenge for Batista's World Heavyweight title. This event would lead to the end of Batista's third reign as champion, after Edge managed to score the pinfall and claim the World Championship.
2008
After Shawn Michaels defeated Ric Flair at WrestleMania XXIV,[88] Batista began a feud with Michaels, calling him selfish and egotistical. The two faced off at Backlash with Chris Jericho as the guest referee. Michaels won after faking a knee injury and performing Sweet Chin Music.[89] Batista then defeated Michaels at One Night Stand in a stretcher match, thus ending their feud.[90] On June 23, Batista was drafted from SmackDown to the Raw brand during the 2008 WWE Draft.[91] Batista became a World Tag Team Champion for a third time on the August 4 edition of Raw when he teamed up with John Cena, his SummerSlam opponent, to defeat Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase for the title.
